Imeall
Tory Island offers us a unique perspective from the far edge of Europe, offering us a new way to view ourselves and consider the future. This is a microcosm where the pressures facing island dwellers, minority indigenous cultures & languages around the world continue to be played out.
LE CHÉILE
This is an invitation to gather together so that we can share a clear picture of Tory Island and focus on the great richness that is found here, so that it may be celebrated and shared for the benefit of all.

Ba é Mairtín 'O Cadhain, ceann de na scríóbhneoirí ba mhó a bhí mar ghuth láidir san ngluaiseacht sin. the core of the proposed Living Archive.....

Lillis Ó LaoireTHIS IS A BREAK
AND A SPACE
Lilliis ‘O Laoire is a native of Gortahork on the northwestern coast of Donegal.Lillis is a respected singer in his own right and a teacher at the School of Irish, National University of Ireland, Galway. He is author of the book "Creag i Lár na Farraige" published by Cló Iar-Chonnachta in 2002. This book is also available in english translation as “On a Rock in the Middle of the Ocean, Songs and Singers in Tory Island”.In the introduction to his book Lillis writes of his relationship with Tory island :“I have been interested in Tory since childhood and often visited the island. Building on primary school experience, I developed an active interest in Gaelic song, initially through the recordings of Clannad, and gradually in the old style (sean-nós), under the influence of my university teacher and mentor, Professor Brendán Ó Madagáin, an acknowledged authority on Gaelic musicology,I became aware that a large body of such song could be found “live” as it were, on Tory island, literally almost on my doorstep. Accordingly, I began to pay more attention to the island once again, and I became acquainted with many islanders, some of whom I got to know very well."Lillis is a respected singer in his own right and a
teacher at the School of Irish, National University of Ireland, Galway.
THIS IS A BREAK
AND A SPACE
Maritime HeritageMaritime heritage of Tory Island includes all the various forms of knowledge, traditional celebrations, lore of the sea, songs, practical fishing skills and the traditions of boat building that evolved along the Irish coast. Acknowledging the key role of fishing as a source of income and livelihood for the people of Tory island - this is an important focus for this collection.
The Iona Currach
a lecture by Donal Mac PolinThis is a lecture delivered by Donal Mac Polin an artist, boat builder, author and well known authority on Donegal currachs as part of the 1500 anniversary celebrations of St. Colmcille on behalf of Donegal County Council.Tory Island was a significant monastic settlement for many hundreds of years, and the remains of a once extensive monastic complex on the island includes a round tower. The island would have been the first stopping point for visitors to Ireland from Iona. Both Tory and Iona are key sites among the many monastic settlements founded by the famous prophet, healer and leader of Celtic Christianity, Colmcille. In this lecture, Donal Mac Polin explores the evolution of the skin boats of Ireland and imagines what kind of currach would have been used by Colmcille in his journey from Ireland to Iona.
